Language Corpora Annotation and Processing
This book describes some of the methods of text annotation and processing that are
developed and applied to digital texts. Although enough advancement is made in
corpus development, limited progress is made in text annotation and processing. We
have tried to put these annotation and processing issues within a single volume so
that people of information and language technology, corpus linguistics, and other
disciplines can refer to this book to explore these crucial aspects, issues, and challenges
of text annotation and text processing. There is a need for a book of this
kind in the global market, and this book fulfills this need. It can be used as a coursecum-
reference book for teaching text annotation and processing at undergraduate and
postgraduate levels. This book, in essence, fulfills the requirements of both academic
and commercial domains.
The topics addressed in this book have high academic and industrial relevance.
Over the last few decades, we observe a strong wave of corpus-based language study
and application. It provides answers to many questions relating to the importance
and application of texts in the advancement of our understanding of a language in
life and living. Through reference to new ways of interpretation and analysis of
empirical data, we search for answers to the basic questions of human understanding
of language beyond the realms of our age-old methods of language description.
The present book thus reiterates the utility of language corpus in academic and
commercial applications.
Within a wider spectrum of speech and language research, the functional value
of an annotated text is beyond question. However, the generation of an annotated
text is a daunting task. We require a large amount of text for hands-on experiments,
implementation, and verification of systems and techniques. We also require a longtime
engagement of scholars on specific text annotation mechanisms. This implies
that success in text annotation and processing is a hard-earned result. This book
highlights some of these issues and aspects.
