Description
This is a workshop for early career scholars who are interested in collaborative research to shape urban studies scholarship from Southeast Asia. In doing so, the workshop will involve civil society activists who have had experience in and/or potentials for collaboration with academia in studying the city. All participants will be involved in rethinking how urban studies is done, the current situation in terms of knowledge production and practice, in the region. Each early career scholar participant would come with a research proposal, consisting of a potential topic and methodology for collaborative research on urban life that are rooted in grounded realities in Southeast Asia. These research proposals would be starting points of discussion to find common threads, concerns, and synergies of visions. Besides being a space to refine individual research proposals, this workshop would also be a platform to shape a collaborative vision and agenda for urban studies. To achieve such vision and agenda, the workshop would facilitate conversations among early career urban studies scholars, together with civil society activists, on overcoming challenges in cultivating spaces for inclusive environments amidst a hyper-competitive neoliberal academic drive among higher education institutions.
The facilitators of this workshop are discussants in the Institutional Roundtable “Urban Studies Scholarship in Action: Voices from Southeast Asia”. This workshop is supported by the Urban Studies Foundation.
