Writing Workshop on Bordering and Borderlands Research for Emerging Scholars

The Asian Borderlands Research Network (ABRN) extends a warm invitation to emerging scholars, who are working on bordering or borderlands-related research within Asia and beyond, to a writing workshop at the upcoming ICAS13 in Surabaya, Indonesia. We welcome early career researchers in a broad sense, including PhD candidates, postdoctoral scholars, new assistant professors or lecturers, and independent researchers who do not have a direct institutional affiliation.

About this Writing Workshop

This workshop aims to provide a collaborative platform for emerging scholars who are in the early stages of developing their research ideas into scholarly articles, conference papers, dissertation chapters, or other forms of academic writing. Participants will have the opportunity to share their research concepts and receive constructive feedback from mentors and peers to advance their work. They will also learn to think from the journal editor’s perspective when it comes to publishing, and have the opportunity to publish parts of their work on ABRN’s blog Border Picks.

Opportunity at the next ABRN Conference

Additionally, participants may enjoy the opportunity to refine their work further towards publication and/or participation in the upcoming ABRN Conference in Jordan in 2025.

Registration Guidelines

Interested participants are invited to submit a concise description (an abstract or short proposal of up to 150 words) of the research or writing they intend to share at the writing workshop, and a short biographic summary of their research interests, backgrounds, contact details and institutional affiliations (if any).

The deadline to send your submission to is 30 June 2024, or when all participation slots are filled. Due to the desire for productive interactions at the workshop, we will limit the capacity to a maximum of 10 participants. Participants will be notified by email by mid-July 2024.

We look forward to fostering insightful discussions and aiding in the scholarly development of your research endeavours within the evolving field of borderland studies in Asia and beyond.
