Democratization through Migration?: Political Remittances and Participation of Philippine Return Migrants
Christl Kessler and Stefan Rother
25 Billion was sent back to the Philippines last year from Filipinos working overseas, which made it the third largest recipient of remittances after India and China. Kessler and Rother examine not just how this largesse has impacted and influenced the Philippines, but they examine how the Filipinos working in countries that are viewed as undemocratic could help shape and influence their own ideas of democracy within the Philippines. There has been an enormous body of work on the economic consequences of international migration, but this is one of the first to gauge the political influences that this has had on the migrants and within the Philippines.
