This book is a comparison of the paths of development of China and Madagascar. Randriaharimalala witnessed the economic development of modern China firsthand after he arrived in China as a student right after the Cultaral Revolution had ended. At that time, the people of China and Africa had similar living standards and faced similar challenges in culture, politics and economic development. But while an economic miracle took place in China, Madagascar fell far behind, becoming one of the poorest countries on earth.
In his book, Randriaharimalala explores the reasons for this growing gap in economic development, despite the similar historical and cultural backgrounds of the two countries. Without taking sides, he describes the different paths the countries took, and reflects on what lies ahead for both China and his native Madagascar.
